4 Reasons Why Your AC Is No Longer Efficient

Your air conditioning unit is one of the most important components of your home as it helps keep your home stay cool and comfortable all year round. As such, the last thing you’ll want to happen to it is a sudden breakdown, especially during the summer season. Unfortunately, there may be times when you’ll notice that your air conditioner is no longer as efficient as it used to be. But why is that?

1. Age
When it comes to keeping your air conditioner in good condition, one way you can accomplish this is by regularly maintaining the unit. However, as time goes by, and you use it continuously, the air conditioner will eventually become worn out. With that in mind, if your AC unit has aged beyond 10 to 15 years, you can expect it to no longer be as efficient as it was before, and chances are you’ll need to have it replaced soon.

2. Dirty Evaporator Coils
As time goes by, your evaporator coils will eventually accumulate dust, dirt and debris, especially if you don’t maintain it regularly. When they become too dirty, you can expect your unit to become less efficient as its cooling capabilities will be reduced as the dirt build up can hamper its ability to transfer heat.

3. Lack of Maintenance
On the other hand, if you flat out fail to keep up with your unit’s maintenance needs, it’s guaranteed that the unit will become less efficient over time. In fact, HVAC maintenance pros say that your AC unit can lose about 5% of its efficiency every year if you fail to maintain it. With that in mind, if you want your unit to remain in top condition, be sure to have the unit tuned up at least once a year.

4. Duct Leaks
Your ducts deliver cool air around your home, and, as such, they’re one of the most important components of your home. Unfortunately, not a lot of homeowners give the ducts too much thought since they’re a part that isn’t always seen. According to professionals, if your air conditioner is relatively new, and it’s not very efficient, consider checking the ducts of your home to see if they’re leaking. If there are any, contact a professional to fix the problem immediately.
