Common Causes Behind Frequent AC Shutdown Problems

An air conditioner is a complex system composed of many different components that work together to ensure proper indoor air quality and comfort. As a homeowner, you’ll likely be using it frequently during the summer season to keep your home cool. However, if you notice that it’s frequently shutting off on its own, it may be a cause for concern that shouldn’t be ignored.

Breaker Problems

Your air conditioning unit has motors that can use large amounts of electrical power. This may sometimes overload your home’s circuit breaker and cause it to trip. If it shuts off by itself, try checking your circuit breaker panel some of the breakers have tripped. You’ll need to reset them first before turning your unit on again. If the circuit breaker still trips, the problem may lie in your home’s electrical system and it should be checked professionally.

Overflowing Condensate Issues

Moisture is accumulated along the evaporator coil and then drips down into a shallow condensate pan. The water collected from the pan is pumped out through a drain, but if it gets clogged, it will lead to an overflow from the pan. Even if the drain isn’t clogged, it can still overflow if the water pump motor becomes faulty and is unable to drain properly. Either way, this will cause your AC’s limit switch to trip and shut off to prevent internal damage. You’ll need to call a trusted cooling service technician who can effectively address your condensate issues.

Faulty Compressor

Your air conditioner’s compressor serves an important function as it pumps the refrigerant through the system. If it becomes faulty, the refrigerant won’t properly change its state and causes your system to shut off. This problem can only be resolved by a trained technician, as they’ll either repair or replace the whole component depending on the damage.
