Gas Furnace Safety 101

You can greatly improve the comfort and energy efficiency of your home by installing a gas furnace. Using it safely will allow you to get the most out of its heating performance.

Here are some safety tips related to heating and indoor air quality.

Keep the Surrounding Area of Your Gas Furnace Clear

When not in use, the furnace can easily blend into the background. However, the system becomes invaluable during the winter, and when it is turned on, the unit’s surface becomes hot to the touch. Make sure there are no flammable items near the furnace, such as drapes, pet bedding or clothing. There should be at least three feet of clear space around it for your safety.

Clean the Furnace Before Turning It On

You should clean your gas furnace before turning it on for winter. Remove dust and debris from the surface with a damp cloth, and vacuum the inside of the furnace. Try turning on the furnace for a few minutes. Everything is fine if the flame is blue. However, if the flame is bright yellow, you should contact a professional. A reputable HVAC repair and maintenance company will also be knowledgeable in dealing with different types of HVAC systems, including ductless HVAC.

Install a Carbon Monoxide Detector

Gas leaks can occur, and their consequences can be disastrous if not detected early. Install carbon monoxide detectors in your home for your safety.

Schedule a Furnace Tune-Up

The simplest way to keep your gas furnace safe and in good working order is to regularly schedule a professional inspection and tune-up with a reputable HVAC company. Do this at least once a year or before the seasons change. Our trained and skilled technicians will perform a thorough inspection of your furnace’s most critical areas to ensure that every component is functioning properly. And if any problems are discovered, you can rely on our team to provide the necessary solution.
