Preventing Allergies From Bothering You This Spring

Spring may bring about blue skies and warm weather, but because of the amount of pollen in the air, it can also mean constant sneezing and nasal congestion for those who frequently suffer allergies. They’ll usually come from nearby flowers, trees, grasses and weeds, but they’re not the only cause that triggers allergies during the season. Even with good air filters installed in your HVAC system, you’ll still have to look out for mold and mildew that may already be circulating within your home.

Fortunately, there are effective ways to keep allergies at bay.

Check Your Home for Signs of Mold Buildup

Aside from pollen, allergies can also be triggered by mold circulating within your home. Mold can thrive in almost any place with high humidity, which can happen more often during the spring season. Make sure to check your home’s vents, ductwork, attic and other areas that can attract moisture. The smell of mildew near your HVAC system or other damp areas can also indicate mold buildup, so make sure they’re thoroughly cleaned as well.

Keep the Area Around Your HVAC Clean

Both your indoor and outdoor HVAC units should be cleaned thoroughly to prevent dust, pollen and particles from entering the system. Get rid of small leaves, twigs and any other accumulated debris on or around the outdoor unit. Doing this will also prevent them from clogging the condensate drain which may otherwise lead to mold growth.

Clean or Replace Your Air Filters

The air filter in your HVAC system is meant to catch pollen, pet dander, dust and other allergens to keep your indoor air quality clean and safe to breathe. However, it needs to be clean to stay effective. So, if you have a dirty air filter in your HVAC, make sure it’s cleaned properly. You can also switch to a higher quality filter depending on your needs as some types can trap even the smallest particles, but this can also affect your system’s efficiency. Consult a trusted technician to know which filters are compatible with your HVAC system!
