Reasons Your Thermostat Isn’t Reaching the Set Temperature

The thermostat is your HVAC system’s command center. Your heating and cooling equipment runs when triggered by this device. However, a malfunctioning thermostat can cause your living space to become uncomfortable. Here are common reasons your thermostat isn’t reaching the set temperature.

Incorrect Calibration

When your thermostat isn’t calibrated right, it won’t reach your desired temperature. It’s a usual problem in new thermostats. This issue is also common after a power outage. If you have an old thermostat, you might need to calibrate it more frequently.

Improper Thermostat Placement

Your thermostat might produce incorrect readings if placed in an area that’s too hot or cold, such as near windows, doors or kitchen appliances. Relocating it into a more centralized place can provide a more accurate reading.

Dirt and Dust Accumulation

Dirt and dust buildup can compromise your thermostat’s performance. It can hinder the device’s ability to measure temperature correctly. Thorough and careful professional cleaning can resolve the problem without risking damage to sensitive components.

Power Issues

Dead batteries, tripped circuit breakers or blown fuses can cause thermostats to stop working. After addressing power-related issues, your thermostat might start running again.

HVAC System Incompatibility

Sometimes, the problem lies not with the thermostat but with the HVAC system itself. For instance, an undersized unit will not cool or heat your home efficiently. Before getting a new HVAC system, it’s best to have professionals evaluate your space. Experienced technicians will measure your home to determine which unit can keep your spaces comfortable.

While simple fixes like cleaning, recalibration or battery replacement can fix some issues, others require the expertise of trained professionals.
