Spring Rains: Can They Affect My Air Conditioner?

Many look forward to spring because of its moderate temperatures and vibrant blooms. However, some can’t help worrying about what the rains during this season can do to their air conditioners. A trusted ductless HVAC installer explains how spring rains can affect your equipment.

Are Spring Rains Bad for Your Air Conditioner?

An AC’s outdoor unit is designed to stand up to the elements. Manufacturers seal electrical components using heavy-duty and corrosion-resistant materials such as plastic, copper and aluminum. Usually, outdoor units handle showers well, regardless of the season. It’s also safe to run your AC during storms or rains.

However, your HVAC system can still suffer damage from heavy winds and windblown debris. Flooding is another threat to your equipment. Once the outdoor unit gets submerged in water, the wiring, motor and other components can develop issues.

With proper care, you can make your HVAC system less vulnerable to damage. You can count on EZ Air Conditioning and Heating for your AC maintenance and duct cleaning needs.

Is It a Good Idea to Cover Your Outdoor Unit?

Some individuals cover their outdoor units, believing it will protect their equipment from harsh weather and temperatures. It may help to know that experts engineered condenser units to withstand moisture and temperature extremes. Covering them will only do more harm than good. Moisture can build up in the cover, leading to corrosion in the outdoor unit’s components.

It’s also not a good idea to place anything on top of your outdoor unit, especially while operating. Doing so will restrict airflow and negatively affect your AC’s efficiency. You can have an awning installed above your condenser if you wish to protect it from debris.
