Tips for Overcoming Fall Indoor Air Quality Challenges

Much like outdoor air, the air you breathe at home contains pollutants. People tend to spend more time indoors as the temperatures go lower. If someone in the family suffers from allergies or asthma, the more you want to improve your indoor air quality (IAQ).

More Indoor Air Pollutants

Experts say that the air in homes is up to five times more contaminated than the air outdoors. During the colder months, you go out less, prolonging your exposure to indoor airborne pollutants. As a result, the risk of asthma attacks, allergic reactions and other respiratory issues increases.

Dirty or Clogged Air Filters

Air filters can eliminate some of the airborne contaminants in your home. For them to be effective, they must be replaced every three months or according to manufacturer recommendations. When clogged, they can cause pollutants to circulate in your home. They can also restrict airflow in your HVAC system, resulting in poor performance, increased likelihood of malfunctions and higher energy costs. Moreover, regular filter changes will help you save on air conditioning and heating repair costs, keep indoor air clean and improve your equipment’s performance.

Temperature Shifts

Temperatures can fluctuate during fall, making you more likely to switch between your thermostat’s heat and cool settings. Air leaks can also introduce more outdoor contaminants into your living space. It will help to seal gaps around your home and upgrade your insulation to minimize energy loss and keep pollutants out.
