What Type of HVAC Do You Have at Home?

Do you know what type of HVAC system you have at home? Knowing this information is more important than you might think. Understanding your system can help you maintain it more effectively and avoid problems that could lead to expensive repairs.

In this post, we discuss the most common residential HVAC systems to help you identify the one you have at home.

Identifying Different Types of HVAC Systems

Split System

A split system, also known as a central HVAC System, consists of two main parts: an outdoor unit (which contains the compressor, fan and condenser) and an indoor unit (which contains the air handler, evaporator coils and blower fan). The outdoor unit is often installed at the side of the house, while the indoor unit is typically mounted on the wall or ceiling.

Hybrid Split System

A hybrid split system is a combination of two separate HVAC systems working together to provide efficient cooling and heating. This type of system is often installed in homes that have high cooling and heating needs. The indoor unit is usually a heat pump that transfers heat, while the outdoor unit contains the necessary components to produce cooling when needed.

Ductless Mini Split System

A ductless mini split system allows you to control the temperature in every room in your home. It consists of two main components: an indoor unit, usually mounted on the wall, and an outdoor unit, which is responsible for the refrigerant cycle. The mini split system does not require ductwork, so each room in your home has its own temperature control.

Variable Refrigerant Flow System

VRF System is often used in commercial buildings but can also be utilized in larger homes. This system controls the amount of refrigerant flowing to each unit, allowing for precise temperature control and efficiency.

Heat Pump

A heat pump is a type of HVAC system that works by transferring heat rather than generating it. During the cold season, it gathers heat from outside and brings it into your home. Then, during warmer months, it functions the same way as an air conditioner. This duality enables the system to provide both heating and cooling. A heat pump is usually installed outdoors, and a separate indoor unit is used to distribute the air throughout your home.
